NWRC Product Design Centre Strengthens Global Innovation Links Through Boston Visit

The North West Regional College (NWRC) Product Design Centre (PDC) has returned from a successful visit to RAPID + TCT 2026 in Boston, one of the world's leading additive manufacturing events, alongside an engagement visit to Harvard University, bringing back valuable insights to support future innovation and product development, all made possible through Connected KAFA funding.

The visit provided the team with first-hand access to the latest developments in industrial additive manufacturing, including advances in metal and polymer 3D printing technologies, as well as emerging materials that are shaping the future of manufacturing. A key outcome of the trip was the confirmation that the Product Design Centre's current capabilities and strategic direction are closely aligned with global manufacturing trends and best practice.

The exhibition also enhanced the team's understanding of next-generation materials, including high-performance and sustainable solutions that have the potential to drive innovation across a range of product development projects. Sustainability was a major theme throughout the event, with a strong focus on reducing waste and improving material efficiency through additive manufacturing techniques. These insights will help inform future approaches within the PDC and support the development of more sustainable products and processes.

As part of the visit, the team also spent time at Harvard University, gaining valuable insight into leading research and innovation support models in the United States. Areas of interest included sports equipment innovation and the commercialisation of research and development activity. The experience reinforced confidence that the Product Design Centre is operating in line with internationally recognised research and development institutions.

The visit has strengthened technical expertise, expanded international networks and opened new opportunities for collaboration. By engaging with industry leaders, researchers and innovators from across the globe, the Product Design Centre is better positioned to support businesses, drive innovation and contribute to the advancement of manufacturing technologies across Northern Ireland.
